A Taste of Travelers Rest

Swamp Rabbit Trail

From Railway to Greenway

The former Greenville and Northern Railway (also known as the Swamp Rabbit Railroad) is crucial to the history of Travelers Rest, as it was one of the main things that kept the town alive. It brought tourists during summer months, transported supplies for local businesses, and more. After the railway went defunct, the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 22-mile greenway, was built on the old railroad roadbed in the early to mid- 2000s. To this day, the Swamp Rabbit Trail plays a role in the allure of TR, allowing people to get exercise via walking or biking, and serving as an anchor point in the city, with many restaurants and shops nearby.

To learn more about TR, pop into the Travelers Rest Historical Society so you can fully appreciate your time in this magical little city. The small museum is run by volunteers of the Travelers Rest Historical Society who are full of TR knowledge and pride, and after they get you up to speed on all things TR, they’ll send you on your way to Main Street, where shops, restaurants, and activities eagerly await.
